    ASHLEY:
MORE THAN 800 PEOPLE DIED IN
    INDONESIA LAST WEEK AFTER A
    CATASTROPHIC EARTHQUAKE AND
    TSUNAMI, AND THAT NUMBER IS
    EXPECTED
    TO GO HIGHER.
    22NEWS STORM TEAM METEOROLOGIS
    KELLY REARDON EXPLAINS HOW THESE
    VERY
    DESTRUICTIVE WALLS OF WATER
    FORM.
    KELLY REARDON:
    TSUNAMIS ARE A DEADLY NATURAL
    PHENOMENON.
THEY CAN BE STARTED BY FALLING
    ROCK OR AN EARTHQUAKE, BUT
    THANKFULLY, OUR RISK
    OF BEING HIT HERE IN
    MASSACHUSETTS IS EXTREMELY LOW.
    A TSUNAMI DEVASTATED INDONESIA
ON FRIDAY KILLING AT LEAST 800
    PEOPLE. BUT HOW EXACTLY DOES
    THIS PHENOMENON FORM?
    "
    THAT CAN BE TYPICALLY ACHIEVED
BY AN EARTHQUAKE, WHICH CAN MOVE
    LARGE AREAS OF LAND
EITHER UP OR DOWN. AND SUDDENLY
THE WATER HAS TO RESPOND TO IT,
    AND THAT WILL START A
    TSUNAMI WAVE."
TSUNAMI WAVES CAN BE MORE THAN
100 FEET TALL, AND CAN TRAVEL AT
    SPEEDS OF
500 MILES PER HOUR, WHICH IS
COMPARABLE TO THE SPEED OF AN
    AIRPLANE. THEY CAN
    BE TRIGGERED BY EARTHQUAKES,
    UNDERWATER LANDSLIDES, OR EVEN
    HUGE FALLING ROCKS. THE
    INDONESIAN TSUNAMI WAS 16 FEET
    HIGH AND WIPED OUT
MOST OF THE CITY OF PALU.
THE AREAS WITH THE HIGHEST RISK
    OF BEING HIT
BY A TSUNAMI ARE IN THE PACIFIC
    OCEAN, LIKE CALIFORNIA OR
    ALASKA, BUT HERE IN
    MASSACHUSETTS,
    OUR RISK IS NEAR ZERO.
    MORE THAN 90 INDONESIAN RED
    CROSS VOLUNTEERS WERE ON THE
    GROUND
    IMMEDIATELY, AND RELIEF EFFORTS
    ARE UNDERWAY. THE RED CROSS'
    FIRST PRIORITIES ARE SEARCH AND
    RECUE,
    MEDICAL SUPPORT AND DISTRIBUTING
    EMERGENCY RELIEF SUPPLIES.
    KELLY REARDON:
    ALTHOUGH OUR CHANCES OF BEING
HIT BY A TSUNAMI HERE ARE NEAR
    ZERO, IT'S
ALWAYS GOOD TO KNOW THAT IN THE
EVENT OF A TSUNAMI, YOUR FIRST
    PLAN OF
ACTION SHOULD BE TO GET TO
    HIGHER GROUND. REPORTING LIVE
